Selecting a tree pupils are asked to discuss and note the characteristics of their tree before estimating its age and calculating its actual age. Armed with tape measures they are shown a method of measuring parts of a tree in order to obtain the correct data to then input into a mathematical equation.

This activity requires the pupils to make observations based on their knowledge and requires them to think logically.
