Meadow sweeping

Using sweep nets pupils run through the long grasses dragging their net behind them. The resulting catch will reveal different species of caterpillars, froghoppers, spiders and much more! Using a pooter the animals can be caught for closer inspection with a bug viewer or magnifying glass. With the aid of specific sheets the animals can be identified and recorded.

This activity, along with tree beating, is ideal for focussing on the adaptations of invertebrates to habitats (camouflage and movement) and the variety of life in grass meadows and also provides useful data for the study of life cycles and food chains.
