Log rolling for invertebrates

Rolling over old, mossy logs in the woodland reveals a host of invertebrate life for pupils to identify and note down first hand. Centipedes, beetles and millipedes are all frequently found, with the occasional newt, frog and toad taking cover. This activity allows pupils to discover the range of invertebrates that dwell in amongst old logs and is invaluable for the teaching of the characteristics and requiremnets of invertebrates.

This activity is particularly useful for the comparison of invertebrates found in different habitats, for example the characteristics of invertebrates living under logs to those dwelling amongst the trees (see tree beating).
