West Hedge
Along the west side of the nature reserve runs an ancient hedge estimated to be over 900 years old! Species such as blackthorn, wayfaring tree, hawthorn, dogwood, ash and hazel can be found in this area and provide a valuable habitat for small mammals. The overgrown hedge has also formed a 'tunnel' and is a lovely feature of the reserve and enjoyable to walk through.
This area is coppiced on rotation, in addition to Old Orchard Wood, and was last coppiced in February 2003 to promote diversity and produce lower, bushier trees.
