Pelham is an ECO-CENTRE!!

Pelham was awarded the status of 'Eco-Centre' in 2002 for our efforts towards a more sustainable lifestyle. We have made many changes in the day to day running of the centre in order to reduce the impact that we have on the environment.

What is an Eco-Centre?

An Eco-Centre takes environmental issues like waste minimisation and the conservation of resources and applies them to the day-to-day running of the centre. We have put many measures in place to minimise our impact on the environment and aim to raise awareness in environmental issues.

Pelham's Eco-Code

In order to obtain Eco-Centre status and to maintain a sustainable centre we have devised our own 'Eco-Code' to help us and visitors to the centre to save energy. We . . .

Turn off taps to save water
Switch off lights to save electricity
Respect all living things
Don't drop litter
Close doors to conserve heat
Recycle packaging and compost food

How have we reduced waste?

Many simple things can help to reduce waste and save us money! Below are just some of the measures that we take at Pelham to reduce our waste . . .

  • We save and re-use old envelopes
  • We use both sides of paper
  • We have replaced our old photocopier with one that prints back to back to save paper
  • We have a designated 'Recycling Point' and collect in paper, plastic, metal and food waste
  • We place food waste in a compost bin and a wormery
  • We encourage all visitors to take part in our Eco-Lunch Challenge to produce as little waste as possible
  • Finally, we weigh all waste and keep a record of how much we recycle. So far this year we have recycled 12,800g of paper and have composted over 14140g of waste food!

How do we conserve heat?
  • The Ash Room has extra windows to reduce the need for lighting, and energy saving lights have also been fitted
  • Insulated roof tiles made from vegetable matter have been fitted in the toilets to maintain heat
  • A false ceiling and energy saving lights have been fitted in the Oak Room to reduce energy used in heating and lighting
How do we conserve water?
  • We have installed 'hippos' in the toilets. These save 3 litres of water each time the toilet is flushed!
  • We use rain water collected in the water butt to water plants in the garden
  • Water that runs through before it gets hot is saved to wash equipment
