Brookmead Wood
The remants of a ditch and bank suggest that there was an ancient woodland on this site. The size of the trees in Brookmead Wood suggest that it was established in the early 20th century and is therefore a secondary woodland consisting largely of mature oak, ash and hazel. Today the woodland is a small oasis for wildlife in the surrounding agricultural landscape. Squirrel dreys, rabbit holes, and a variety of birds nests re-inforce it's role as a haven for animals in this area.
Dog's mercury, wood violet and dog's violet are amongst the ground flora to be found here, as is another of the reserve's orchids, the early purple orchid.
