Year 3 - Rocks, soils and landscape

A day course ( 4 - 5 hours) which covers many of the learning experiences and objectives in the QCA Science module 3D.

An introduction to the different types of rock.

Use of the compass and map, to enable pupils to follow a trail around the site, finding out about different landuse.

Testing differences in rocks, including those found on the site. e.g. hardness, lustre and permeability.

Infiltration investigation relating soil type with drainage.

Use of soil sieves to see that soil contains particles of different sizes

Testing soils at different sites, including pH - to simply understand that soils have different properties.

Year 5/6 - Geography of Rivers

A day course (4-5 hours) concentrating on the Geography of rivers. We might include...

Revision of the water cycle.

Investigations of drainage, relating this to ...linking this to...

The environmental impact of floods, making use of photographs of recent floods.

Use of maps, pictures and field sketches to understand the importance of the river in he landscape.

Measurements of flow rate, depth and width in the river and brook, to help understand how rivers erode, transport and deposit materials

Measurements of water quality, to see how human activity affects the river and environment.

Opportunities to relate practical work to generalisations about rivers elsewhere.
